Promoting open practices within research communities is crucial for advancing scientific knowledge and efficiently disseminating research findings. Among academic institutions that are embracing open science, Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) has taken a proactive stance in promoting open practices among its researchers, catalyzing a transformative shift towards transparency, collaboration, and the accelerated sharing of knowledge.

In 2022, EUR became an OSF Institutions member to increase the visibility of EUR researchers who use the OSF to share their research and educational outputs, so that they can advance transparency and improve rigor.

“EUR’s partnership with COS allows EUR academics to responsibly share their output using a user-friendly platform that connects with other popular tools,” said Dr. Antonio Schettino, Ad Interim Head of Open and Responsible Science, Erasmus Research Services. “By lowering technical barriers, EUR academics share more frequently, gain visibility amongst their peers in the process, and contribute to normalizing openness and transparency in all disciplines.” EUR has established many open science efforts, including the Open Science Community Rotterdam and a four year Open & Responsible Science (ORS) strategy program, which produced many activities including the Engaged Research in Open & Responsible Science campaign to highlight the importance of open science and the resources available to their research community.

The OSF can be accessed freely by researchers, providing a project management and collaboration tool that supports researchers throughout the entire research lifecycle - from planning, to conducting, to reporting, and discovery. As an OSF Institutions member, EUR utilizes additional tools to improve workflow efficiency with SSO, keep track of outputs from the EUR research community, and support librarians and other research support staff in meeting policy requirements.

EUR joins other institutional members accelerating open scholarship and increasing the transparency of institutional research. The OSF Institutions infrastructure helps institutions like EUR improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their research processes, connecting all aspects of the research lifecycle to reveal insights into research investment beyond citations.

“Open and responsible scholarship practices increase the transparency, quality, and visibility of research and educational academic outputs,” said Dr. Schettino. “They are essential to ensure a trustworthy, mutual collaboration with all members of society, which is a very important goal for EUR.”
