Get More Out of Your Metrics with Departmental Information

April 14th, 2025,

When we launched the OSFI Metrics Dashboard earlier this year, we reserved space for a feature that we know will be useful: departmental information about your researchers.

The information that we have about your users' institutional identities comes from your own authentication service. In some cases, we can get additional information, like the users department or user status (e.g. student, faculty, staff, etc.) if your institution provides it. You can find out more about how this set up works on this help page.

Screenshot 2025-04-14 at 10.31.51 AMOnce the feature is set up, users have to go through the institutional login for us to begin picking up that information from them. If you would like, we can do a one-time load of this information that you would provide in a spreadsheet. In the coming months we will also be launching a new feature that will require institutional users to login at least once every six months. This should ensure that these departments get filled in and users who are no longer part of your community are removed from the user list. (note that this will not remove the affiliation from their content, it will just remove their ability to add it to new content they create).

If you would like to explore whether or not it is possible, please contact us at institutions@cos.io. We may need to follow up in a conversation with the department at your institution that runs the authentication service.
