COS Welcomes Lisa Cuevas Shaw as COO and Managing Director

Charlottesville, VA — The Center for Open Science (COS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Lisa Cuevas Shaw as Chief Operating Officer and Managing Director, effective July 19, 2021. Cuevas Shaw brings key competencies to COS with experience accumulated over leadership roles intersecting scholarly publishing and technology. As COO and Managing Director, she will oversee the execution of COS’s overall organizational strategy while advancing operational systems and policies.

Lisa Cuevas Shaw is a senior executive and educator with nearly 25 years of progressive leadership, strategy development, and operations experience across academic, educational, and professional publishing, digital products, and a range of professional services. Prior to joining COS, she was COO and Deputy Publisher with JMIR Publications, a leading open-access journal publisher, focusing on medicine, health, and technology. She also worked with SAGE Publishing for more than 20 years in senior leadership roles across SAGE’s academic Journals Division; Research Methods and Evaluation books program; College Division; and its subsidiary education company, Corwin. Throughout her career, Cuevas Shaw has been committed to mission-driven organizations and initiatives that have an unwavering focus on growth, sustained impact, and equity in access to knowledge. Across the varied roles she has held, she has had the privilege and pleasure of building innovative products, tools, resources, and services as well as supporting the communities these products and services have served.

Cuevas Shaw earned a B.A. in English from UCLA and an MBA with emphasis on organizational behavior from California Lutheran University. She is completing her PhD at Pepperdine University’s Graduate School of Education and Psychology, with a focus on leadership and systems thinking applied to the open science movement. She also teaches courses covering current issues in management at Pepperdine University.

“Lisa brings background, experience, and skills that COS needs as it transitions into organizational adulthood,” said Brian Nosek, Executive Director of the Center for Open Science. “She will help mature COS’s earned revenue models and strengthen coordination and collaboration across our product, policy, and research teams to maximize impact and mission advancement as we partner with stakeholders across the research community. We are delighted to have her joining the organization.”

Cuevas Shaw succeeds Nikki Bialy as Chief Operating Officer. COS wishes to express its gratitude to Bialy for her organizational management and leadership.
