Available Data

Researchers requesting access to the GFS data agree to keep the data private until it is made publicly available, document analyses that are unplanned or changed from the preregistration, report outcomes, share code and materials, and make findings openly accessible. Gallup releases one wave of data on an annual basis. Wave 1 was released in 2024, one-off mid-year retention survey data was also released in 2024. Wave 2 was made available in 2025 and wave 3 will be released in March 2026. The datasets and their components are listed below. Note that each year an additional wave is added to the existing data to allow for longitudinal analysis. Non-Sensitive data is provided separately from Sensitive data (which requires ethical approval). An additional dataset exists for the United States only where data has been weighted at the state level in addition to the country level.

Available Data

Primary Dataset

  • Waves 1, 2, and 3 non-sensitive (global) - preregistration is open, data is expected in March 2026

Specialized Datasets

  • Wave 1, Yr 1 mid-year, wave 2, and wave 3 non-sensitive (global) - preregistration is open, data is expected in March 2026

  • Wave 1, Yr 1 mid-year, wave 2 and wave 3 US weighted by state, non-sensitive (US only) - preregistration is open, data availability to be announced

  • Wave 1, Yr 1 mid-year, wave 2, and wave 3 sensitive (global) - preregistration is open, data availability to be announced

Past Datasets

  • Wave 1, and wave 2 non-sensitive (global) - available now through preregistration or on April 8, 2026 without preregistration

  • Wave 1, Yr 1 mid-year, and wave 2 sensitive (global) - available now through preregistration and ethical board approval

Sensitive Data Requirements

Access to sensitive data is through preregistration and must include an Ethical Review Board approval (e.g. IRB, IEC). Sensitive data include the following variables:

  • Geographic data: Latitude and longitude of the respondent at each point of data collection, reported at the 0 decimal level

  • Demographic information (interviewer): Interviewer’s age, gender, education, and religious affiliation.

  • Panel membership: Number of survey invitations and number of surveys completed in the last six months (if more than one survey was conducted), number of contacts, and incentive payments.

  • Language of interview

Read the guide and supplemental methodology (codebook).

US Weighted Data by State

This dataset contains just the US data with two-letter state abbreviations, county FIPS codes (wave 2 only), and weights by state.

All relevant forms for preregistration can be found in the Global Flourishing Study Registry.

Sample Data Resources

Sample Data Codebook

The sample data codebook contains information about the organization and naming of the variables in the sample data and is a key resource for researchers when working with the dataset.

The codebook for the GFS data is available for anyone to access on the GFS Registry, or you can simply access it here.

Access Sample Data Without Preregistration

This sample dataset contains the data collected in Sweden. It has been perturbed by adding a small amount of random error and randomized across rows. Read more here

You can use it to prepare your hypotheses, models, and analysis script. Fill out this form to access the sample data without preregistration.

Access Sample Data With Preregistration

The sample dataset contains the data collected in Sweden which has been perturbed by adding a small amount of random error. Read more here.

Access to this sample dataset requires preregistration in advance through the GFS Registry.

Researchers requesting access to the GFS data agree to keep the data private until it is made publicly available, document analyses that are unplanned or changed from the preregistration, report outcomes, share code and materials, and make findings openly accessible.
