Charlottesville, VA – The Center for Open Science (COS) has appointed Terry Foor as Director of Development. Foor brings a depth of understanding of open-source and open science communities and supporters to COS as well as progressive fundraising experience and leadership. As Director of Development, he will lead COS’s efforts to strengthen its culture of philanthropy and broaden its growing community of engaged supporters.

Foor is a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) and brings to COS experience and leadership in building donor engagement and relationships, most recently as the Director of Development for NumFOCUS, a nonprofit based in Austin, Texas that sponsors dozens of the world’s foremost open-source scientific software projects. At NumFOCUS, he led all fundraising efforts and managed a diverse revenue portfolio comprising individual supporters, corporate sponsors, institutional funders, and events. He also engaged with members of the broader open science community, creating and cultivating a tiered donor program called Open Science Champions that allows donors to map their support to specific resource needs and initiatives.

Prior to joining NumFOCUS, Foor was the Senior Development Officer at United Way for Greater Austin, where he focused on stewarding relationships with corporate partners and soliciting major individual gifts.

Foor earned a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Oklahoma and an M.A. in Political Science from Western Michigan University.

“I’m very pleased to be joining COS as Director of Development. I share COS's commitment to the values of openness, integrity, and reproducibility in scholarly research, and I believe that a shift in culture that enacts these values is crucial to greater scientific discovery and innovation,” said Foor. “I look forward to meeting the COS community of researchers, practitioners, and other stakeholders; I'm confident that, together, we will continue to help make science a more open and impactful endeavor.”

“Terry’s connection to open-source and open science communities aligns so well with COS’s reach and engagement efforts and will support COS in driving research culture change,” said Lisa Cuevas Shaw, Chief Operating Officer and Managing Director for COS. “We are delighted to have Terry join the organization not only to realize our sustainability goals, but also to truly engage more meaningfully with our range of supporters.”

Foor succeeds Tina Krall as Director of Development. COS wishes to express its gratitude to Krall for her leadership and development of COS’s philanthropic efforts.
